before and after
This charming Sunnyland home needed some TLC when it came to the work flow and function of the kitchen. It is difficult to create a cohesive space where there are literally six doorways to contend with! To find a solution, we relocated the entry to the bathroom (one of those six doorways) to the adjacent guest bedroom. Not only did this provide a great ensuite room on the main level, but also eliminated one of the doors from the kitchen that is now better utilized as a pantry and refrigerator wall. One more door to an awkward under-stair closet was moved to become a coat closet from the entry. This made room for the stove and hood. A small island provides great prep space and a perching zone for the home owner’s daughters.

Refinishing the original fir floor hidden underneath layers of laminate flooring was a great starting point. From there, beautiful reclaimed fir cabinets by Jeffrey Elkins of Renew Wood add tons of function with lots of drawer storage. Light granite and fun white hex tiles keep the space light and bright.

<![CDATA[Camber is open downtown Bellingham!]]>Tue, 05 Sep 2017 22:53:04 GMThttp://spiraldesignstudios.com/blog/camber-is-open-downtown-bellingham
If you live in Bellingham, you've probably already been there. On the corner of Bay and Holly, Camber has moved into what used to be a quiet and beige little comic shop and has transformed the space into the hottest new coffee and wine bar in town. And we all know how Bellinghamsters love their coffee!

This project was created with an amazing team of Camber folks, Spiral Studios, Bundle Design Studio, Chuckanut Builders, and Smith and Vallee Woodworks, with photos by Chris Dinottia.

Taking cues from both classic and modern design principles, we wanted a fresh, clean lined space that also had richness and luxurious finishes. The finished product includes a blend of walnut, quartzite countertops, decorative cement tile, a plush black banquet, and maple shelving, with brass details.

The original high ceilings and windows gave this space lots of light and airy-ness. Working on this project was such a great combination of favorites: design, collaboration, and coffee.

<![CDATA[Material Spotlight: Cork Floors]]>Tue, 18 Apr 2017 21:50:31 GMThttp://spiraldesignstudios.com/blog/material-spotlight-cork-floors
Here at Spiral Studios, we are now carrying cork flooring options from Wicanders! Cork is a great sustainable flooring option that has come a long way from it's first debut. Raw cork is harvested once every nine years from the cork oak tree, keeping the tree alive to grow another cork layer. We like keeping trees alive.

Design options range widely. With the comfort level near that of carpet, it's installed without the mess and allergy repercussions (they are hypo-allergenic). Oh, and did we mention they are among the most efficient choices for insulation?

Check out these finish options (I’m eyeing the finish below for my kitchen and laundry areas…):

Not what you were expecting from cork, right?

For all you DIYers out there, cork flooring options are really simple to install as they are come in a click-together floating floor tile system. It can also be glued down for a more permanent installation.

Feel free to make an appointment with us if you're interested in this product!

<![CDATA[top five blue greens...]]>Fri, 24 Mar 2017 00:57:57 GMThttp://spiraldesignstudios.com/blog/top-five-blue-greens...as seen in Spiral Projects
It's not just in the logo. I love blue-greens, green-blues, green-blue-grey. Whatever that color is, it always stops me in my tracks. It's calm and soothing, but can also be fresh and energizing depending on how much gray is in it, or if there is more blue or more green. It works in modern spaces and in historic spaces, it's really incredibly versatile.

Without even meaning to, i swear!, it seems to end up in the majority of my projects. In bathrooms, on cabinets, front doors, bedrooms, even on fireplace walls! Really, it's so versatile.

Here are some of the greatest blue-green, green-blues, green-blue-grey colors that Spiral has worked with!

Picture

Boca Raton Blue, from Benjamin Moore, was used as a fun, fresh cabinet color in the Bungalow North project. So beautiful paired with Walnut cabinetry and white quartz countertops.

On the more soothing gray side of green-blue, Sea salt by Sherwin Williams, is so beautiful in this old farmhouse bathroom. Complete with a clawfoot tub, and a converted antique dresser vanity, this room feels like you're in a far away time and place.

Pacific Ocean Blue by Benjamin Moore was a last minute decision. After nixing a wall of tile in this powder room, the room was needing something. And there is no better, affordable way to add visual interest than a bold color statement. Enter Pacfic Ocean Blue...voilà!

Picture

Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore, another favorite soft blue-green-gray to fall in love with. Perfect for this bathroom paired with walnut cabinetry and classic subway tile.

Okay, this one maybe doesn't have much green or gray, but it's such a beautiful deep blue, it made it on the list. This one was just so perfect for 3 Oms Yoga Studio. As seen in the bathrooms as well as the dramatic double height entry staircase, this blue makes a statement. Don't you wish you could dive into it?

<![CDATA[The new face of wallpaper ]]>Fri, 20 Jan 2017 18:29:41 GMThttp://spiraldesignstudios.com/blog/the-new-face-of-wallpaper
Wallpaper. Have you ever tried to get rid of it? Hours, days of tedious peeling, steaming, and scraping. Often the best way of making it disappear is just texturing and painting over it. But now wall paper is making a new appearance with updated graphics that are both fun and refreshing with bold graphic patterns, subtle textures, and cheering colors. So if you're still plagued by red velvet damask paper, the best way of hiding it, could be to wallpaper over it!

Places I love wallpaper are the unexpected, like closets or laundry rooms. Also so good in powder rooms, kids' rooms, and as an accent wall in den's or offices.

A few wallpaper companies i've worked with recently, and have loved their papers are:

1. Loboloup Their Meadow paper is pictured above, and there are so many other great ones.

2. Aimee Wilder So many of Aimee's patterns are so perfect for kid's rooms.

3. Wall & Deco Their Pavot paper (below) is stunning.

<![CDATA[Kitchen Remodel: cabin in the woods]]>Sat, 14 Jan 2017 00:58:51 GMThttp://spiraldesignstudios.com/blog/kitchen-remodel-cabin-in-the-woodsThis sweet shingled home nestled in the cedars trees was in need of some better storage, counter prepping space, and a dose of charm. Relocating the stove to the same wall as the sink allowed for a larger counter space on the opposite wall. More drawer space creates more efficient storage and utilizing the nooks and crannies made the most out of a small space. Finishes include Fir cabinets with butcher block and quartz counters, subway tile, with special tiles made by the client's brother.

<![CDATA[Kitchen Remodel: Before and After ]]>Fri, 02 Dec 2016 17:32:53 GMThttp://spiraldesignstudios.com/blog/before-and-after-mid-century-bungalowmodern bungalow

This teeny kitchen, nestled into a 1920's bungalow was not without old school charm but lacked storage and function for a young, busy family. In order to gain space for extra storage and and food prep for active cooks, we needed to utilize the existing dining space. The dining room was able to shift into an existing adjacent tv room. By removing the wall separating the tv room and kitchen, we brought in more light and connection. This also created a better work flow and allowed us to add useful appliances. Hello dishwasher! The clients were able to add their personality to the home with cheerful finishes including: painted uppers with walnut lowers, white quartz countertops, large format subway tile, marmoleum flooring, and fun light fixtures.
