Natural Systems Design
Natural Design Systems, a river, coastal and basin sciences, and engineering company scored on the purchase of a historic building in downtown Bellingham, which had been the Blackburn Office Equipment for many many years, and was originally the American Legion building. The space was a little tired and in need of some enlivening to serve as a new Bellingham headquarters for the company. Luckily, there were many treasures uncovered like the original maple ballroom floor, giant fir posts and beams, and some of the best views of the bay and the ever changing waterfront area. We wanted to play off the original historical character of the space but also incorporate an industrial office vibe that suited the pulse of the new folks inhabiting the space. We kept some existing elements like the Mad Men-esque glass corner offices and the original staircase, but the building received a full renovation with a new open floor plan office concept before NSD moved in.
